The index is not solely based on the violence the state uses against other states, it’s also based on the violence *inside* the country’s borders. How many people are murdered, how many people wind up in jail, how much peace is there on the street, etc.
Isn’t it incredible that America should even have to compare itself to these countries?
I live in Belgium, nº15 on the list. We sunk 4 positions relative to the last list. We have soldiers in Afghanistan trying to guard the peace. We are just as develloped as the USA, but you can meet me in any dark ally in any of Belgium’s cities at any given time. Do you want to meet me in Compton at midnight?

The regimes in those countries have a tendency to be rather brutal to the opponents of those regimes.
Essentially anyone who is considered troublesome by the regimes in those countries is removed from the society in one way or another.
If the United States did away with our constitutional rights and protection of citizens from the power of government the United States Fovernment could become a dictatorship and use its power to crack down on the causes of violence that the Economist cites.
However the result would be an increase in violence and supression from the government which is not part of the Economist index.
Libya Syria and Nicaragua all have brutal repressive governments which use a great deal of violence and the threat of violence against its people.

When you have an agenda, as the economist does, you can cook the numbers to get the data you desire. Libya and Syria lack the means to project violence on other countries, so they don’t rate very low on the list. If they had the means, you better believe they would do it. In addition, I guess the economist doesn’t consider the state of human rights as being part of a peace index. Try bad mouthing Assad in Syria, or Qaddafi in Libya, the outcome will not be very peaceful.
all countries, except Britain and Israel, are more peaceful than the US. Was this news to you? what else does the U.S. have to do to become more violent?????????
