The End Of The Commodities Bull? – Far From It!
Article by Fat Prophets
It’s no secret that the modern-day financial market goliaths, known as leveraged hedge funds, are selling billions of dollars worth of commodities investments to meet their redemption demands. This represents another severe short-term factor that is helping to drive down the prices of most commodities. The other major factor is the rising value of the US dollar, seemingly against all odds and good sense.
Adding to the downward pressure on commodities and resource-related companies are rumours that some hedge funds are aggressively short-selling the stocks that are in the portfolios of their vulnerable peers, which is sending share prices even lower.Of course, these hedge fund sharks don’t care about fundamentals or portfolio turnover. They are simply in the game for a quick profit. On the other hand, at Fat Prophets we are greatly concerned by fundamentals and in our view the longer-term fundamentals for the resource sector remain healthy.
Resource stocks are trading at very low price-to-earnings ratios and at very large discounts to cash flow. As we have commented previously, different commodities rotate in leadership each year; however, long-term supply constraints have not disappeared and demand from global infrastructure spending continues to remain robust.
We agree with Morgan Stanley’s global mining research that concludes that we are still in the early to middle years of a commodities super-cycle, on which we’ll go into more detail later. On the gold and oil oscillators above, it appears that those two natural resources are deeply oversold, and the same holds for the equities linked to these resources. The rising value of the US dollar has also contributed to the recent decline in the price of commodities and commodity stocks. According to research from US Global Investors and Morgan Stanley, the dollar is up more than two standard deviations over the past 60 trading days. As you can see on the dollar chart above, this has happened only a handful of times during the past decade.
You will also note that once the US dollar is up two standard deviations, it usually reverses direction and starts correcting to the mean long-term price. If the current rally follows that pattern, we could soon see the dollar again losing value, which would be supportive of oil, gold and other commodities. The chart above from Morgan Stanley goes back more than 200 years to show cyclical trends in commodities prices. What you notice is that the upswings tend to be sustained for long periods of time before retreating. These commodities super-cycles often last 20 to 25 years, according to Morgan Stanley’s research, and if this one follows the pattern, we have many years to go before it plays out. The key drivers are the rapid economic growth in China and infrastructure spending in other large emerging markets. However, whilst we’re in the midst of a super-cycle, there are periods of short-term volatility that can be caused by any variety of factors, among them supply and demand issues, governmental policies and market sentiment. During this time, any single commodity can swing wildly from year to year, even during a strong bull market.Infrastructure spending is the foundation of future commodities demand. As the CEOs of two of the world’s biggest resource companies have confirmed in recent weeks with positive comments on China, we are looking at strong and steady growth in infrastructure spending over the next decade. Most of the billions to be spent will be on the building of roads, airports, power generation and the like in Asia, followed by Russia and Eastern Europe, and Latin America.
Returning to the leveraged hedge funds for a moment, they are not the only reason for the current volatility in commodities markets. There has also been reduced demand for these resources and worries linger about the tender state of the US economy and the prospects of a deep global economic slowdown.
While we remain bullish from a longer-term perspective, we are also not ignoring these short-term headwinds in our outlook. Accordingly, we are actively reviewing our positions, as the current environment means smaller situations are likely to struggle. At the same time though, there are opportunities amongst mid to larger-cap companies that we never thought would present themselves.
We remain optimistic about the longer-term picture for commodities, however the short-term will be characterised by volatility related to ongoing uncertainty with respect to financial markets and credit worries emanating from the US. Longer-term, commodity supplies remain tight and as global demand inexorably increases in line with population growth, price rises for both commodities and resource companies will reflect this.

Against All Odds: Lessons on Success From Our 4 White House Hopefuls
Article by PeopleJam.com
No soap opera writer could come up with stories as twisted and dramatic as those of our Presidential and Vice Presidential nominees. Tragic family deaths, torture, infidelity, drugs, underage pregnancyit doesnt get any more theatrical than this.
Yet, despite their twisted family tales, these four people have risen to positions of great power and success. While it may seem like they have nothing in common, McCain, Palin, Obama, and Biden have all risen to the top of the political ranks, despite having experienced what might be considered crippling setbacks for other people. How do they do it? Great determination, spirituality, and a lot of luck might have something to do with it. Certainly, positivism and can-do attitudes propelled these four people into successful leadership roles.
JOHN McCAIN:
John McCain was held as a Prisoner of War in North Vietnam for five-and-a-half years. He was severely torturedso much so that he cannot raise his arms above his head. During his time as a POW, his first wife, Carol, a swimsuit model, suffered crippling complications after driving her car into a pole in snowy conditions on Christmas Eve.
When John returned from Vietnam and was reunited with Carol for the first time, she was heavier and on crutches, he was visibly scarred from torture. John began having extra-marital affairs, eventually finding Cindy, his current wife. He pushed Carol for a divorce, then married Cindy.
What sets McCain apart from the thousands of other POWs who come back haunted by their experiences, unable to function normally in society again? One can speculate about his psyche, but one thing is for certain: he took his terrible experiences and used them as positive stepping-stones to achieve his goals. Instead of lamenting being crippled by the Vietnam War, he used his experiences to prove his mettle, understanding, and experience in combat situationsexperiences, he says, that will make him Americas next great leader at a time when the US is at war.
BARACK OBAMA:
Barack Obama did not become who he is without his share of hardships as well. His mother and father divorced when he was 2-years old. He saw his father only once before his father died in a car accident when Obama was 21. Born in Hawaii, Obama moved to Indonesia with his mother following his parents divorce, moving back to Hawaii when he was 10.
Such a turbulent childhood could rival any that leaves its owner lying on a shrinks chair. But Obama embraced his unique upbringing, determined to makes his life about what he wanted it to be, not about what had befallen him. He graduated from Columbia University, went on to get his law degree from Harvard, where he became the first black president of the prestigious Harvard Law Review. Now he has made history by becoming the first African American candidate for the Presidency.
SARAH PALIN:
Sarah Palin is a new face on the national political front who has recently risen to meteoric political success despite several possible setbacks: her 17-year old daughter is pregnant, her youngest child has Downs Syndrome, and she has little to no political experience on a national or world platform.
She, too, has used McCains method of turning possible negatives into positives. She has used her daughters pregnancy to emphasize her staunchly pro-life beliefs, earning the Republican ticket the allegiance of many Republicans that had felt put off by what they viewed as maverick politics instituted by McCain.
Instead of focusing on her weaknesses as a politician, she plays up her strengths, which include her appeal as an all-American hockey mom, in addition to her hard stance on conservative platforms such as gun control and her environmental legislation. She is now the first ever female Republican Vice Presidential nominee.
JOE BIDEN:
Finally, Joe Biden may seem as plain a white-American politician as they come. An asthmatic teenager, son of a car salesman, Biden went to law school in 1968 and was elected to the Senate in 1972. Shortly thereafter, however, Bidens wife and three children were in a car accident. His wife and infant daughter died, and his two sons eventually fully recovered. Biden was sworn into office while at the hospital bedside of his two sons.
Instead of giving up his life to care for his sons full-time, or to grieve, Biden decided to commute to work an hour-and-a-half each day, from his home in Wilmington, to Washington D.C., and continues to do so today. Instead of using this life-changing experience as an excuse to not follow through on his dreams, Biden found a way to commit himself both to his family and to his passion for politics.
Different Approaches, Impressive Results
Each of these four people has risen to great success in politics, despite enormous odds. They have lived through experiences that have crushed thousands of other people with similar stories. While each candidate has a very different approach to life and politics, a common theme of positive thinking in extreme situations, as well as a no-excuses, can-do attitude shines clearly in all of them, proving positivism and a good attitude are requisites for success against seemingly insurmountable odds.
